The course guides students through the reading and analysis of Hans Kelsen’s Peace through Law, reconstructing its historical context and focusing on its argumentative structure. Particular attention will be paid to the critique of state sovereignty, the effectiveness of the international legal order and the role of supranational institutions endowed with coercive powers. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand Kelsen’s model of legal pacifism, assess its assumptions and limits, and compare it with the structure of contemporary international organizations.
