Public Transportation from Airports
From the Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport, which is 26km (16mi) southwest of the city, take the direct train, which usually leaves the Airport Station daily every half hour, and takes about 35 minutes to arrive to the Termini Station.
The other airport in Rome is Ciampino, about 20km (12mi) southeast of the city. From there you can jump on a COTRAL bus which connects with a subway to Stazione Termini. From there, follow instructions below. You can also drive down the Via Appia Nuova (as noted below, newcomers are discouraged from using this option.)
From the Termini Station: take the Metro (subway) Line B (Linea B – A big red letter M indicates the entrance to the underground subway) in the direction LAURENTINA and get off at St. Paul’s Outside the Walls (Basilica San Paolo). You need to buy a ticket, (which cost 1.50 € each and are good for both buses and the metro) from a tobacconist, newsstand or vending machine at the station before you get on the train (or bus). From the Basilica San Paolo station walk about 300 meters north, towards and then past the Basilica to the University.
Driving is not advisable for the uninitiated even though an autostrada runs from the airport to the city: it’s a 45 minute drive through hectic traffic in Rome’s complex streets.
