LEGAL ENGLISH
The course aims for the acquisition of modern Legal English terminology used in the sector. Students will learn specific legal lexicon to understand, analyze, critique and interpret opinions of general juridical texts and opinions, European directives and regulations, courtroom procedures, intellectual property, landmark decisions, etc. Students will reach a B2-C1 level of English and will be able to understand, clearly express themselves and explain legal topics in specific, clear, modern legal terminology appropriate for the sector.

Programma

This course is meant to introduce students to legal English. The main aims of the book and of the matarials available at the professor dashbord are:
1- the students' acquisition of a specific legal terminology and usage of legal English;
2- providing an overview of the UK and U.S. legal systems and a stimulate a comparison between them and the Italian and the European legal systems (CLIL);
3- Through daily lectures, written assignments, and in-class exercises students will practice a wide array of legal English skills ranging from legal reading and writing strategies to oral presentations thus developing a linguistic and metalinguistic awareness.
4- developing competences of textual analysis and of critical analysis of texts dealing with legal issues;

Modalità Erogazione

This course is held in English. In case students find it difficult to follow a specific case it is possible to ask for an Italian translation. Students will be encouraged to participate activley by reading aloud, posing and answering questions, commenting on specific issues at stake. In case COVID-19 health emergencies will require further socially distancing and lockdown measures, lessons will be held according to the guidelines the university will provide and will be here available (online). Attendance is not compulsory (except for online pre-recorded lessons that are integral part of the program)

Modalità Valutazione

The exam is composed of different sections which include: cloze test (multiple choice and/or true/false); fill-in-the-blanks exercise; open question. This exam is graded as a PASS / NOT PASS basis (meaning that only a P or NP will be recorded as final grade in the course).
